Strict tasting rules were applied. The order of service was established beforehand by lottery. Each of the wines were poured into fresh wine glasses from new sealed bottles and served at room temperature. Only ice water and white peasant bread were available to cleanse the palate.
The judges wrote down their impressions of each wine on score sheets. The scoring was done on a 5-point system, with 5 as the best. Double-Gold, Gold and Silver medals are awarded based on a set range of final point scores received from the judges. There were no Bronze medals awarded for this tasting.

This is no small achievement. The Press Democrat’s competition has the honor and distinction of recognizing the best wines produced from California’s prestigious North Coast wine region. This contest drew top-level wines and hand-picked top-notch judges to create a sophisticated and enthusiastic wine experience that is considered second to none. Wines judged here were considered to be a cut above the rest – simply put, the Best of the Best. A standing of this caliber truly showcases the level of wines produced in Northern California.
Wines were judged from a field of 1,117 entries. Only wines rating 90+ points were awarded gold medals and were eligible to move on to the “Best Of” Category.

“With 12% Petite Sirah, this old-vine wine is dominated by candied plum on the nose and mouth, with additional notes of ripe black fruits on the palate. The palate is bold yet well-integrated, with a velvety texture and graceful structure.” —V.B. 2/1/18

Did you know that Miro Cellars is a side-project for winemaker Miro Tcholakov? That’s right; he also works his Zinfandel magic at Trentadue Winery in Geyserville. In fact, he even makes his Miro Cellars wines there at Trentadue in a “custom crush” arrangement. He carefully keeps his wines (and those made for other custom crush clients) separate from Trentadue’s wines. However, he does not play favorites: each and every lot—no matter who ultimately gets his name on the label—gets 100% of Miro’s loving care.
Below is a news article from the Press Democrat in Santa Rosa:
