The Tasting:
The Fifty Best held a blind tasting of 19 recent release California Zinfandels with 14 members of our wine judging panel. Strict tasting rules were applied. The order of service was established beforehand by lottery. Each of the wines were poured into fresh wine glasses from new sealed bottles and served at room temperature. Only ice water and white peasant bread were available to cleanse the palate.

The judges wrote down their impressions of each wine on score sheets. The scoring was done on a 5-point system, with 5 as the best. Double-Gold, Gold and Silver medals are awarded based on a set range of final point scores received from the judges. There were no Bronze medals awarded for this tasting.

Placing in the Alberta Beverage Awards, the prestigious wine competition held by Canadian food and wine magazine Culinaire, is reason to celebrate.

Judged by buyers, sommeliers, retailers, educators, and wine writers, the blind tasting is held annually in Calgary since 2013. The results are published in Culinaire Magazine’s October issue.

The Orange County Wine Society hosts the Annual OC Fair Commercial Wine Competition on the first weekend of June. In conjunction with the OC Fair, the competition has become the largest and most renowned judging of California wines in the world.

The OCWS is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that educates and promotes the knowledge and appreciation of wine. One of its main goals is to provide scholarships for college students in the fields of enology and viticulture. More than $630,000 has been awarded to students at 7 California colleges.

During the OC Fair, wine competition entries will be available at the Wine Courtyard for the public to taste (for a fee). In 2017 more than 55,500 tastes were poured by OCWS Volunteers, directly supporting our scholarship program.
