KEY POINTS:

Vineyard: Silverwood Vineyard is located almost at the top of Cloverdale’s Pine Mountain—the newest appellation in Sonoma County. The vineyard is at 2200 feet elevation above the meandering Russian River down in the valley. The soil there is as rugged as it gets: mostly decomposed rock and shale. This is extreme viticulture! The allure of mountain grown grapes is the extended sunshine and more intense solar radiation. This vineyard is above the fog layer and experiences milder temperature inversions—cool days and warmer nights. All of that contributes to abundant but soft tannins, deep dark color and pronounced fruity aromas in the blueberry-blackberry spectrum.

Winemaking: The grapes were harvested on October 16th, and then destemmed and sorted by removing the raisins and the shot green berries. The whole berries were directly dumped into a tank for cold maceration for about 5 days and then fermented and pressed at dryness. The malo-lactic fermentation was complete in barrels. During aging the wine was racked twice, barrel to barrel, with nitrogen.

Winemaker’s tasting notes: The moderate temperature inversion at 2200 feet elevation—and the terroir in general—makes this wine richer in tannins, with concentrated wild blackberry and blueberry aromas, and enhanced varietal-specific flavors of dark fruits, slight earth and minerals and subtle spices.
This wine, if properly stored, should age well for 5-10 years. Cheers!

KEY POINTS:

Vineyard: Colloquially known as Rockpile since the 1850s, the northwestern corner of Dry Creek Valley where the grapes in this wine were grown received its AVA status fewer than ten years ago. The allure of this appellation is virgin soils, relatively dry soil condition and plenty of sunny, fog-free days and nights. This vineyard is located at the most northern end of the appellation and is only a three-acre parcel. The soils are typical for the region: red, mixed with decomposed granite and other rocks, relatively of poor nutritional values, therefore producing low yields of highly concentrated fruit.

Winemaking: One of the joys of making wine for semi-Garagiste Miro Cellars is seeking out extremely high-quality wine grapes from small vineyards. This very small lot of Rockpile Petite Sirah is a perfect example. Being less than one ton, the grapes were fermented in small half ton bins and punched down by hand until dry. What I love about Petite is the ease of fermentation and responsiveness of the grapes. The composition was nearly ideal and no “adjustments” were needed. After fermentation and pressing, the wine was aged in two new French oak barrels for 22 months. Just before bottling, the wine was lightly fined and filtered.

Winemaker’s Tasting Notes: This is a special wine showing Petite Sirah at its best—inky dark, with complex and concentrated flavors of blueberry, blackberry, black licorice and molasses. The mouthfeel is dense and juicy with a long,
chocolate finish.

THE CONCEPT:

After almost twenty years of being on the forefront of the Zin advocacy movement and making great Zins for other wineries I finally committed to making one for MIRO Cellars. The evolution of Zin in my opinion is toward balance instead of power, terroir expression instead of the sameness of modern winemaking; elegance instead of brute force.

[av_textblock size=” font_color=” color=”]

KEY POINTS:

Vineyard: The vineyard is located behind Fitch Mountain in Healdsburg on the banks of the Russian River where two great appellations-Alexander and Russian River Valleys overlap. This 80 year old dry-farmed vineyard is a part of a historic property owned by the Passalacqua/Seghesio families and currently used for their Old Vines blend. The microclimate there is much cooler than Alexander Valley, but warmer than the greater Russian River.

Soils: Predominantly well-drained sandy/gravelly loam, with relatively low fertility—perfect for head pruned Zins and Petites.

The Vintage: 2007 is shaping up as one the best so far in this decade. The weather was nearly perfect without excessive heat allowing the grapes to “hang” on the wines and mature without any stress. The fruit set was very well balanced as well, matching the vines potential to perfectly ripen the grapes.

Winemaking: The grapes were harvested on September 7th at (modest for Zin) 24.5 Brix sugar. The acid and pH were spot on without the need for any corrections. The grapes were sorted and destemmed to about 80% whole berries with minimum raisins and jacks into a small open top tanks for punch down fermentation. Total time from crush to pressing was 11 days. The wine was aged in a mixture of 35% new Balkan, French and Hungarian oak barrels.

Winemaker’s Notes: The first impression is of a mélange of wild berries, cranberries and cherries; the nose is clean, focused and well-defined. Further aeration reveals intriguing Asian spices with elements of cocoa, vanilla and sweet oak. The wine has a firm structure with a long and juicy finish. Drink now or age for 2-5 years.
