The Cuvée Sasha Concept:

My goal was to create a distinctive yet accessible GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre) blend. I’ve always had a special preference for the great wines of Southern France and with this inaugural release I’m offering my California version of this style.

KEY POINTS:

Vineyard: The grapes are grown on Montelago Vineyard planted between 2000 and 2400 feet elevation above the largest lake in California—Clearlake. South facing exposure.

The Soil: Brick red volcanic cinders and pumice-like gravel and stones. In general, low fertility with high level of calcium and potassium.

The Vintage: The 2012 harvest brought Northern California back on track with one of the best vintages we’ve had in several years. High Valley does not get the morning fog as the coastal valleys do. It is classified between region 2 and 3 (very similar to Sonoma and Napa) for its summation of temperatures during the growing season. The 2012 vintage was perfect in every aspect of grape growing, delivering fantastic fruit and respectively, great wines.
Winemaking: The grapes were harvested on October 4th, 2012 in the cold early morning, then sorted by hand and destemmed in the most gentle way possible. The must was fermented at relatively cool temperatures in an open top tank. In December, after mallolactic fermentation, the Cuvée Sasha was blended and then aged for 11 months in 18% new oak and neutral older barrels.

Tasting Notes: What I love about Grenache is the seductively inviting aromas of jammy strawberries, dry apricots, guava and cranberry with hint of dry rose petals and Herbs de Provence that make you smell the wine over and over again. The mouth feel is clean, fresh and lively without any heaviness with focused acidity and food friendly softness. Cheers!

Winemaker’s Tasting Notes:

A viscous and juicy wine that does not require a lot of aging to please you. Ripe without going overboard, the wine is loaded with the “essence” of Zin—wild berries, dark cherries and strawberries typical for Dry Creek Zins. The oak contributes aromas of spice, toast and slight vanilla- chocolate with a bit of a brown sugar. On the palate the wine is full, soft and finishes fresh and juicy. At the time of these notes, the wine is very young and tightly focused with good structure.

[av_textblock size=” font_color=” color=”]

KEY POINTS:

Vineyard: 2011 Miro Zin was harvested from two distinct vineyards in the heart of Dry Creek Valley. Geographically the sites are opposite of each other and on very different soil types. Piccetti is the oldest of the two—about 30 years old and it was part of Joe Vogensen’s property—planted on a very steep slope in Western Dry Creek valley. Wolcott-Bevill is just off Dry Creek road on a hill with eastern exposure.

The Vintage: 2011 harvest was a bit challenging with three rain events in the month of October. Zin is an early ripening variety and thankfully both vineyards were ready to harvest before the first rain on October 1st and 2nd. Mother Nature was good to me that year because Zin does not like rain at full ripeness. The season was relatively cool overall resulting in brighter fruit aromas, higher acid levels and intensely colored wines in general.

Winemaking: The grapes were harvested early morning still cold from the night and destemmed only with no crushing. Piccetti was fermented in small open top bins because of the relatively thinner and more fragile berry skins. Wolcott-Bevill was tank fermented with pump overs. The fermentation was very slow but eventually it finished dry.

The wine was aged in 35% new Bulgarian and French oak barrels for about 13 months Before bottling 5.5% Petite Sirah from Piccetti vineyards was blended in as well. Cheers!

KEY POINTS:

Vineyard: Silverwood Vineyard is located almost at the top of Cloverdale’s Pine Mountain—the newest appellation in Sonoma County. The vineyard is at 2200 feet elevation above the meandering Russian River down in the valley. The soil there is as rugged as it gets: mostly decomposed rock and shale. This is extreme viticulture! The allure of mountain grown grapes is the extended sunshine and more intense solar radiation. This vineyard is above the fog layer and experiences milder temperature inversions—cool days and warmer nights. All of that contributes to abundant but soft tannins, deep dark color and pronounced fruity aromas in the blueberry-blackberry spectrum.

Winemaking: The grapes were harvested on October 16th, and then destemmed and sorted by removing the raisins and the shot green berries. The whole berries were directly dumped into a tank for cold maceration for about 5 days and then fermented and pressed at dryness. The malo-lactic fermentation was complete in barrels. During aging the wine was racked twice, barrel to barrel, with nitrogen.

Winemaker’s description: The moderate temperature inversion at 2200 feet elevation—and the terroir in general—makes this wine richer in tannins, with concentrated wild blackberry and blueberry aromas, and enhanced varietal-specific flavors of dark fruits, slight earth and minerals and subtle spices.
This wine, if properly stored, should age well for 5-10 years. Cheers!

KEY POINTS:

Vineyard: 2010 harvest was a bit challenging with early rain in the middle of harvest. Luckily the Pinot Noir ripened earlier than the rest of the varieties and was all harvested before the rain. The Floodgate is well known, “star” status vineyard located at the South end of the Russian River Valley. The season was relatively cool overall resulting in brighter fruit aromas and more elegant wines in general. The 3 tons of Pinot grapes were equally divided between three clones-667,777 and 115. The idea is to bring together the different nuances that each clone has to offer.

Winemaking: The grapes were picked on September 18th of 2010 and chilled in the vineyard with dry ice. At the winery the fruit was gently destemmed and after a few days of “cold” soak fermented in open top tank by native yeast. During the aging the lees on the bottom of the barrels was frequently stirred with the intention to make the wine with richer and fuller mouth feel. During the life of this wine before bottling all procedures were done with one major consideration—very gentle and hands off approach to preserve the most of the delicate Pinot aromas.

Winemaker’s tasting notes: The 2010 Miro Pinot Noir has fresh, medium red bright color. The first impression is of cherry compote, hint of cranberry, ripe strawberry and pronounced rose petals aromas. With further aeration the wine shows slight nuances of new oak barrels-vanilla and toast and a hint of forest floor and earthiness. The mouth feel starts out freshly fruity and finishes with balanced acidity and soft tannin. The wine is still very young at the time of these notes and it will develop nicely with 2-4 years of aging. Cheers!
