After receiving 6,960 entries from 35 states across the country, the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition (SFCWC) has once again successfully narrowed thousands of wines down to an exclusive few. A complete listing of the 2018 results, sortable by price point and category, can be found at winejudging.com.
In the second week of January, 67 skilled judges from a variety of fields including trade, education, media, retail and hospitality traveled to the Cloverdale Citrus Fairgrounds in Sonoma County to determine the best wines in the USA. Double Gold 2011 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.
92 points A terrific Zinfandel, beautiful to drink now for its soft richness. Flatters the palate with deep, lingering black cherry and raspberry pie filling, vanilla, Indian spice and sandalwood flavors, but it’s completely dry, with rich, intricate tannins. Only 190 cases were produced, but worth the search.”

2008 Petite Sirah
87 points Steve Heimoff of the Wine Enthusiast Magazine rhapsodizes, “A beautiful Petite Sirah that takes the variety’s wild berry and spice flavors and big tannins and tames them down to elegance. It’s dry and moderate in alcohol, which is always a consideration with Petite Sirah. A minor quibble is excessive softness. Drink now.”
2008 Cabernet Sauvignon
88points “Rich Blackberry, cherry, anise…”

2009 Pinot Noir
87 points The February 2011 Wine Enthusiast Buying Guide says, “A softly delicious Pinot made for drinking now with upscale fare. It’s pale in color and dry, with very rich flavors of Dr. Pepper, raspberry jam and sweet smoky oak, folded into a silky texture.

“This is a ripe, lusty Zinfandel, with many special qualities to recommend it. It’s dry and rich in smooth tannins, and offers a flood of wild forest berry, sweet new leather, red currant, mocha and exotic Asian spice flavors. Delicious, and will hold for up to six years.” – December 2009
“Highly Recommended” – California Grapevine, August/September 2009
