Tasting Notes
The Vineyard: The Wolcott-Bevill vineyard is just off of Dry Creek Road on a hill with south eastern exposure. The vines are about 32 years old and trellised. The soils are typical for Dry Creek Valley Cortina type-yellow/red with fine structure and relatively less fertile and shallow.
The Vintage: According to the National Integrated Drought Information System, 2022 was the dryest in 128 years. Grape yields were down about 18%, average. The good news is that there weren’t any fires in Sonoma County. The grape quality was very high across all varietites, with notably smaller berry and cluster sizes. This all adds up to a stellar quality vintage.
Winemaking: The grapes were harvested early morning still cold from the night and destemmed only with no crushing and fermented in a small, temperature-regulated stainless steel tank. The fermentation was very slow due to relatively low temperature but eventually it finished dry.
